Objective: To investigate how plasma exchange (PE) and double plasma molecular adsorption combined with half-volume plasma exchange (DPMAS + half-volume PE) affect the curative effect and short-term survival rate in liver failure. Methods: Data from 181 cases of liver failure caused by different etiologies from January 1, 2017 to September 31, 2020, were selected. Patients were divided into a PE treatment alone group and a DPMAS + half-dose PE treatment group. The laboratory indicators with different models of artificial liver before and after treatment and the survival rates of 7, 14, 28, and 90 days after discharge were observed in the two groups. Measurement data were analyzed by t-tests and rank sum tests. Categorical data were analyzed by χ (2) test. Results: Non-biological artificial liver therapy with different models improved the liver and coagulation function in the two groups of patients with liver failure (P < 0.05 in PTA% intra-group). The coagulation function was significantly improved in the PE treatment alone group compared with that in the DPMAS + half-dose PE group [PT after treatment: (20.15 ± 0.88) s in the PE treatment alone group, (23.43 ± 1.02) s, t = -2.44, P = 0.016 in the DPMAS+half-dose PE group; PTA: 44.72% ± 1.75% in the PE treatment alone group, 35.62% ± 2.25%, t = 3.215 P = 0.002 in the DPMAS + half-dose PE group]. Bilirubin levels were significantly decreased in the DPMAS+half-dose PE group compared to the PE treatment alone group [total bilirubin after treatment: (255.30 ± 15.64) µmol/L in the PE treatment alone group, (205.46 ± 9.03) µmol/L, t = 2.74, P = 0.07 in the DPMAS + half-dose PE group; direct bilirubin after treatment: (114.74 ± 7.11) µmol/L in the PE treatment alone group, (55.33 ± 3.18) µmol/L, t = 7.54, P < 0.001) in the DPMAS + half-dose PE group]. However, there was no significant effect on leukocytes and neutrophils after treatment with different models of artificial liver (P > 0.05) in the two groups, and platelets decreased after treatment, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (t = -0.15, P = 0.882). The inflammatory indexes of the two groups improved after treatment with different models of artificial liver (P < 0.05], and the 28 and 90 d survival rates were higher in the DPMAS+half-dose PE group than those of the PE treatment alone group (28 d: 60.3% vs. 75.0%, χ (2) = 4.315, P = 0.038; 90 d: 56.2% vs. 72.5%. χ (2) = 10.355 P < 0.001). DPMAS + half-dose PE group plasma saving was 1385 ml compared with PE treatment alone group (Z = -7.608, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Both DPMAS+half-dose PE and PE treatment alone have a certain curative effect on patients with liver failure. In DPMAS+half-dose PE, the 28-day survival rate is superior to PE treatment alone, and it saves plasma consumption and minimizes blood use in clinic.

Type II innate lymphoid cell (ILC2) is a newly identified innate immunological cell that belongs to the lymphocyte lineage in cell morphology, resides in the body's mucosal tissues, and has the dual functions of innate and adaptive immunity to promote tissue remodeling and repair after injury. Additionally, it is involved in the occurrence and development of a variety of liver diseases and plays an important role in maintaining the immunological homeostasis of the liver region. This article reviews the differentiation, development, and biological functions of ILC2, with particular attention to the research progress in liver diseases.

RESUMO

Relevant research in recent years has demonstrated that the atrial fibrillation occurrence rate is significantly higher in patients with cirrhosis. The most common indication for long-term anticoagulant therapy is chronic atrial fibrillation. The use of anticoagulant therapy greatly reduces the incidence rate of ischemic stroke. Patients with cirrhosis combined with atrial fibrillation have an elevated risk of bleeding and embolism during anticoagulant therapy due to cirrhotic coagulopathy. At the same time, the liver of such patients will go through varying levels of metabolism and elimination while consuming currently approved anticoagulant drugs, thereby increasing the complexity of anticoagulant therapy. This article summarizes the clinical studies on the risks and benefits of anticoagulant therapy in order to provide a reference for patients with cirrhosis combined with atrial fibrillation.

Objective: To understand the species, distribution, and extent of drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria in patients with liver cirrhosis combined with bacterial infection in a tertiary hospital in Xinjiang. Methods: 1 271 cases with liver cirrhosis combined with infection were analyzed retrospectively for pathogenic bacterial species and drug resistance condition in different bacterial strain. Results: Among the 1 271 cases with liver cirrhosis, 480 were combined with infection, and the infection rate was 37.8%. The majority of infected patients had decompensated cirrhosis (438 cases). Peritoneum (327 cases, 60.8%) was the common infection site, followed by lungs (16.9%). 343 strains of pathogens were isolated from 480 infected cases, of which 289 strains were among the top 10 common distinct bacteria, accounting for 76.5% and 23.5% of Gram-negative and positive bacteria. The first top three strains were Escherichia coli. (33.2%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (11.4%), and Enterococcus faecium (11.1%), and there were differences in the drug resistance rates of each strain. Conclusion: In a tertiary hospital in Xinjiang, patients with decompensated cirrhosis have a high rate of bacterial infection. The pathogenic bacteria are diverse, mainly Gram-negative bacteria; however, the infection rate of Gram-positive bacteria such as Enterococcus is gradually increasing. Additionally, according to the bacterial properties, they are divided into four categories: Enterobacter, Enterococcus, glucose non-fermenting bacteria and Staphylococcus, and it is found that even the same species of bacteria have different drug resistance rates.

In July of 2020, bulevirtide was conditionally approved for the treatment of adults with compensated chronic hepatitis D. Some clinical studies have evaluated the safety and efficacy of bulevirtide as a treatment option for chronic hepatitis D in recent years. Herein are presented a brief review and an outline.

Objective: To investigate the sero-epidemiological characteristics of the hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection among hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients in Xinjiang region. Methods: A single-center cross-sectional analysis method was used to select 264 cases of hepatitis B virus infection who were hospitalized in the Center for Infectious Diseases and Liver Diseases of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from August 2021 to January 2022. All patients were tested for HDV Ag, HDV IgM, HDV IgG, and HDV RNA. The infection status of hepatitis D virus was analyzed by grouping according to their clinical type, HBV viral load, and HBsAg level. A paired t-test was used for data with measurement data conforming to normal distribution. A paired rank sum test was used for data that did not conform to normal distribution before and after treatment. Results: A total of 36 cases (13.64%) and 26 cases (9.85%) were positive for HDV serological markers and HDV RNA. According to clinical type grouping, the positive rates of HDV serum markers in patients with chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis B-related cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure were 13.46%, 12.43%, and 20.83%, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference among the three groups (χ2=0.86, P=0.649). The positive rates of HDV RNA were 11.54%, 8.11%, and 20.83%, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference among the three groups (χ2=4.015, P=0.134). According to HBV viral load grouping, the positive rates of HDV serum markers among patients with viral loads <20, 20-2 000, and >2 000 IU/ml were 17.15%, 7.81%, and 6.67%, respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant among the three groups (χ2=4.846, P=0.089). The positive rates of HDV RNA were 9.47%, 10.94%, and 10%, respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant among the three groups (χ2=0.113, P=0.945). According to HBsAg level grouping, the positive rates of HDV serum markers in HBsAg<0.05, 0.05~250, and >250 IU/ml were 14.29%, 16.67%, and 10.85%, respectively, and there was no statistically significance between the three groups (χ2=1.745, P=0.418). The positive rates of HDV RNA were 4.76%, 8.77%, and 11.63%, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference among the three groups (χ2=1.221, P=0.543). Clinical outcome, disease course, HBV DNA, serological markers of viral hepatitis, routine blood test, biochemical indicators, coagulation function, and other laboratory indicators were compared between HDV serum marker and/or nucleic acid positive and negative patients, and there was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion: The positive rate of HDV serological markers and HDV RNA is 13.64% and 9.85%, respectively, at a single center in the Xinjiang region, and there is still a high HDV infection rate among the HBV-infected patients with low levels of viral load and HBsAg.

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of HBV-related liver cirrhotic patients with low viral load. Methods: A retrospective analysis on 481 inpatients with HBV-related cirrhosis with low viral load [HBV DNA≤2 000 IU/ml (10(4) copies/ml)] general condition, virological indicators, liver function-related indicators, complications, and incidence of complications were analyzed. The t-test was used to compare the average measurement data, and the χ (2) test was used to compare the count data. Results: 481 cases were mainly male (male/female: 324/157), aged 20-83 (53.31 ± 11.67) years old. Han nationality accounted for 71.518%. 386 cases were HBsAg positive. 391 cases were HBeAg positive, and 140 cases were HBV DNA positive. The average value of bilirubin, albumin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, platelets, and prothrombin were 50.59 ± 91.25 (µmol/L), 33.68 ± 7.5 (g/L), and 60.66 ± 106.95(U/L), 63.37 ± 86.19(U/L), 106.65 ± 83.22(×10(9)/L), 68.82% ± 25.33%, respectively. CTP class A/B/C had 220/150/111 cases. The average values of CTP, MELD, APRI and FIB-4 were 7.61 ± 2.58, 10.98 ± 5.79, 2.34 ± 3.56, 6.91 ± 8.04, respectively. The overall incidence of complications in HBV-related cirrhotic patients with low viral load, HBV DNA negative, HBV DNA positive, HBsAg negative, and HBsAg positive were 80.0%, 82.7%, 73.6%, 85.3%, and 78.8%, respectively. Among them, 283 cases (58.84%), 197 cases (55.77%), 86 cases (61.43%), 52 cases (54.74%) and 231 cases (59.84%) were of hypersplenism, and 267 cases (55.51%), 197 cases (55.77%), 70 cases (50.00%), 56 cases (58.95%), and 211 cases (54.66%) were of esophagogastric varices. There were 59 cases (12.27%), 48 cases (14.08%), 11 cases (7.86%), 12 cases (12.63%), and 47 cases (12.18%) of rupture of esophageal and gastric varices, respectively. 202 cases (42.00%), 147 cases (43.11%), 55 cases (39.29%), 42 cases (44.21%), and 160 cases (41.45%) were of ascites, respectively. 17 cases (3.53%), 12 cases (3.52%), 5 cases (3.5%), 2 cases (2.11%), 15 (3.89%) cases were of hepatic encephalopathy, respectively. There were 6 cases (1.25%), 3 cases (0.88%), 3 cases (2.14%), 0 cases (0%), 6 cases (1.55%) of liver cancer. 29 cases (6.03%), 21 cases (6.16%), 8 cases (5.71%), 9 cases (9.47%) and 20 cases (5.18%) were of portal vein thrombosis. Compared with the overall incidence of complications, 341 HBV DNA-negative patients and 95 HBsAg-negative patients still had higher incidence of complications. The patients were grouped by age, and in < 40 years old, 40-50 years old, and > 50 years old, the overall complications were 80.8% in 42 cases, 76.8% in 116 cases and 81.7% in 227 cases, and the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: HBV infection patients with low viral load, and those whose HBsAg has disappeared, are still at risk of developing liver cirrhosis and even serious complications, and whether such population need antiviral therapy and benefit from it deserves further research.

The Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice has been receiving substantial attention due to the discovery of quantum spin liquid state associated with this model. Consequently, its classical partners such as the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model and associated phase transitions become concerned. Specifically, an intermediate Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase engaged in the transition from the high-temperature (T) disordered state to the low-T sixfold degenerate state is predicted in the isotropic KH model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 187201 (2012)10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.187201], but so far no sufficient experimental proof has been reported. In this work, we consider an essential extension of this KH model on the honeycomb lattice by including the Kitaev exchange anisotropy that is non-negligible in realistic materials. The associated phase transitions are thus investigated using the Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that such an anisotropy will result in a degradation of the sixfold degeneracy of the ground state in the isotropic KH model down to the fourfold or twofold degenerate ground state, and the finite-T phase transitions will also be modified remarkably. Interestingly, the intermediate KT phase can be suppressed by this Kitaev exchange anisotropy. This work thus provides a more realistic description of the physics ingredient with the KH model and presents a possible explanation on absence of the intermediate phase in real materials where the Kitaev exchange anisotropy can be more or less available.

Organophosphate ester (OPEs) has been widely used as a substitute of brominated biphenyl ethers and other brominated flame retardant (BFRs), and their health effects and environmental impacts are widely concerned. This article systematically reviews the common types, metabolites, environmental occurrences, exposure pathways, levels, toxic effects and biomarkers of OPEs, in order to explore the relationships between OPEs exposures and biomarkers, to reveal the potential mechanisms of health effects, and to provide references and scientific basis for the health effects of OPEs exposure in China.

Objective: To understand the mutational characteristics of ATP7B gene of hepatolenticular degeneration in Xinjiang region. Methods: 24 cases were diagnosed as hepatolenticular degeneration and the exon of ATP7B gene was detected in some of their siblings and parents. Results: A total of 45 ATP7B gene mutations (93.75%) were detected in 24 cases, of which 14 cases were homozygous mutations or compound heterozygous mutations, six cases were heterozygous mutations and four cases were no mutations. A total of 24 gene mutations and 14 SNPS were detected, including 8 new mutations: c.251C > A, c.121A > c, c.2945C > A, c.2194C > T, c.2947T > c, c.3626T > A, c.3662_3664del, c.3557G > T. The most common mutations were c.2621C > T (p.A874V) [16.7% (4/24)] and c.2333G > T (p.R778L) [12.5% ​​(3/24)]. A total of 4 cases were diagnosed as pre-symptomatic. Conclusion: In this study, the most common mutation in the ATP7B gene is A874V. The most common genetic mutations in Han and Uyghur patients were different. The most common mutation in Han and Uyghur patients is R778L and A874V. Exon 11 is the gene mutations hot spot for patients with hepatolenticular degeneration in Xinjiang region, and is one of the priority exons to be detected when screening patients with suspected hepatolenticular degeneration.

Objective: To understand the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype distribution characteristics in Xinjiang region. Methods: 6462 cases with chronic HCV infection that were treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January 2013 to September 2018 were selected, and repeated testers were excluded. A total of 4773 cases with HCV genotypes were efficiently included. PCR-reverse dot hybridization method was used to retrospectively analyze the genotypes distribution. χ (2) test or F-test was used for intergroup comparison. P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Five genotypes were detected in 4 773 samples: genotype 1b 2928 cases (61.3%), genotype 2a 1241 cases (26%), and genotype 3a 375 cases (7.9%), genotype 3b 205 cases (4.3%), and genotype 6a 24 cases (0.5%). Patients were 48.14 ± 13.93 years old. Genotype 1b was mainly detected in all age groups. There were 2 965 cases of Han ethnicity and 1808 cases of 19 ethnic minorities, of which 1798 cases (60.6%) and 1130 cases (62.5%) were genotype 1b, and 235 cases (7.9%) and 345 cases (19.1%) were genotype 3, respectively. Among the ethnic minorities, Uyghur were the predominant, and genotype 6a could be detected; however, no other ethnic groups had detected genotype 6a. There were 704 Uyghur of genotype 1b (62.1%), 269 Uyghur of genotype 3 (23.7%), and 235 Hans of genotype 3 (7.9%). There were 2 413 males and 2 360 females, of which 1 418 males (58.8%), and 1 510 females (64%) were of genotype 1b, and 424 males (17.6%), and 156 females (6.6%) were of genotype 3. There was a statistically significant difference between the gender of patients with genotype 1b and non-genotype 1b (P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the detection rate of genotype 2a, 3a, 3b, 6a between Han and ethnic minority patients (P < 0.05). Conclusion: HCV genotypes distribution in Xinjiang region is diverse, and is mainly type 1b. An ethnic minority has higher proportion of HCV genotype 3 than that of Han ethnicity. HCV genotypes detection in Xinjiang region enriches the distribution characteristics of HCV genotypes and provides a basis for individualizing treatment for patients in China.

Objective: To investigate the causes of death and etiological characteristics of skin tissue donors, and to provide reference for allogeneic skin transplantation. Methods: From October 2008 to October 2018, 49 skin tissue donors accepted by the Burn Department of Wuhan Third Hospital met the inclusion criteria of this study, and a cross-sectional study was conducted. According to the cause of death, the donors were divided into accidental death group (19 cases) and non-accidental death group (30 cases). The sex and death age of 49 donors were recorded, and the death age between different sex donors and that of donors between accidental death group and non-accidental death group were compared. Diseases or circumstances that caused the death of donors, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, syphilis virus carrying status, and peripheral blood microbial culture results of 49 donors were recorded, and the detection of blood-borne infectious risk factors of donors between accidental death group and non-accidental death group was compared. Abnormal skin tissue was also selected during allogenic skin graft preparing for pathological examination. Data were statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney U test and continuity correction chi-square test. Results: (1) Out of the 49 donors in this group, 38 were male (77.55%) and 11 were female (22.45%). The death age was 42.00 (24.00, 55.00) years, and the death age of male donors was similar to that of female donors (Z=0.120, P>0.05). The death age of donors in accidental death group was lower than that in non-accidental death group, but the difference was not statistically significant (Z=-1.581, P>0.05). (2) Among the causes and circumstances of the 49 donors in this group, there were 19 cases (38.78%) of injury, poisoning, and some other consequences of external causes, 11 cases (22.45%) of circulatory system diseases, 9 cases (18.37%) of tumors, 3 cases (6.12%) of nervous system diseases, 2 cases (4.08%) of respiratory system diseases, and 2 cases (4.08%) of congenital malformation, deformation, and chromosome abnormality, 1 case (2.04%) of blood and hematopoietic organ diseases and some diseases related to immune mechanism, 1 case (2.04%) of digestive system disease, and 1 case (2.04%) of genitourinary system disease. (3) There were 9 donors (18.37%) with blood-borne infectious risk factors among the 49 donors in this group, including 8 cases (16.33%) of blood-borne infectious diseases, which were 5 cases (10.20%) of hepatitis B, 2 cases (4.08%) of syphilis, and 1 case (2.04%) of hepatitis C, respectively. Blood microorganism culture was positive in 1 case (2.04%), in which multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected. Risk factors of blood-borne infection were detected in 2 donors in accidental death group, with detection ratio lower than that in non-accidental death group (7 cases), but the difference was not statistically significant (χ(2)=0.562, P>0.05). (4) A total of 8 donors' abnormal skin tissue were selected, including 4 cases of intradermal pigmented nevus, 1 case of scar, 1 case of pseudoepithelioma hyperplasia, 1 case of epidermal verrucous hyperplasia, and 1 case of large amount of pigment granules in dermis. Conclusions: Non-accidental death caused by diseases is the main cause of death of skin tissue donors, and the risk of donor-derived infection of non-accidentally dead donors is slightly higher than that of accidentally dead donors. Before the allogeneic skin is obtained and transplanted, the cause of death of the donor should be carefully investigated, and the health status should be evaluated, so as to avoid the occurrence of donor-derived infection.

OBJECTIVE: The brain structure and function differences among first-episode schizophrenia (FESZ) patients, chronic schizophrenia (CSZ) patients, and normal control (NC) subjects were investigated using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Also, a support vector machine (SVM) combined with recursive feature elimination (RFE) was used for classification. PATIENTS AND METHODS: First, 44 FESZ patients, 44 CSZ patients, and 56 NC subjects were recruited, and structural MRI images were acquired. The regional gray matter volumes (GMVs) of 90 regions of interest (ROIs) were calculated, two-sample t-tests were conducted to analyze the GMV differences among the groups, and the partial correlations between the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores and altered regional GMVs were calculated. Individual functional MRI images of the three groups were measured. The individual regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and degree of centrality (DC) values of the 90 ROIs were calculated and used to evaluate the differences among the groups. Then, the partial correlations between the PANSS scores and altered regional ReHo, ALFF, and DC were determined. An SVM combined with RFE was employed for classification using both structural and functional MRI input features. The sensitivity and specificity were measured to quantify the SVM performance. RESULTS: The GMVs in the bilateral calcarine of FESZ and CSZ patients were significantly lower than that of NC subjects. Compared to the NC group, the GMV was significantly reduced in numerous additional brain regions of the CSZ group. In comparison to the NC group, the patient groups exhibited significant ReHo increases in several regions and ReHo reductions in the occipital lobe. ReHo in the insula and left postcentral gyrus of CSZ patients were significantly lower than that of the NC subjects. Compared with the NC group, both patient groups exhibited ALFF aberrances in numerous regions. A significant reduction of ReHo, ALFF, and DC in certain regions were also found in patient groups compared with that of NC group. Significant positive correlations were found between the PANSS scores and ReHo and ALFF of the temporal and frontal lobes, while these correlations were negative in the occipital lobe. The SVM with RFE achieved excellent classification performance. The best performance was obtained using the following inputs: the ReHo and ALFF for FESZ/NC classification; the DC, ReHo, and ALFF for FESZ/CSZ classification; and the ReHo and ALFF for CSZ/NC classification. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that compared with the FESZ patients, brain GMV aberrances was increased in the CSZ patients. The functional features including DC, ReHo, and ALFF, could facilitate FESZ diagnosis, which is more sensitive than structural features in classification. The SVM with RFE presents excellent classification performance and assists SZ diagnosis.

In this work, we study the magnetic orders of a classical spin model with anisotropic exchanges and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in order to understand the uniaxial stress effect in chiral magnets such as MnSi. Variational zero temperature calculations demonstrate that various helical orders can be developed depending on the interaction anisotropy magnitude, consistent with experimental observations at low temperatures. Furthermore, the uniaxial stress induced creation and annihilation of skyrmions can be also qualitatively reproduced in our Monte Carlo simulations. Our work suggests that the interaction anisotropy tuned by applied uniaxial stress may play an essential role in modulating the magnetic orders in strained chiral magnets.

Based on the modified Heisenberg-Kitaev model, the effects of magnetic substitution on the magnetic properties of the honeycomb-lattice iridate [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] are studied using Monte Carlo simulations. It is observed that the long-range zigzag state of the original system is rather fragile and can be replaced by a spin-glass state even for small substitution, well consistent with the experimental observation in Ru-substituted samples (Mehlawat et al 2015 Phys. Rev. B 92 134412). Both the disordered Heisenberg and Kitaev interactions caused by the magnetic ion-doping are suggested to be responsible for the magnetic phase transitions in the system. More interestingly, a short-range zigzag order is suggested to survive above the freezing temperature even at high magnetic impurity doping levels.

With the expanding demand for genetically modified (GM) rice, its safety evaluation is of great significance. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the acute cytotoxicity of the whole protein extract from GM rice Bar68-1 in Mus musculus lymphocytes in vitro. Cell viability was determined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) tests. CCK-8 tests was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cell dehydrogenase (catalytic redox enzymes) activity was spectrophotometrically determined at 450 nm. The tests result were recorded immediately. NRU tests were completed under yellow light in a dark room according to an improved protocol. Lysosomal uptake of neutral red was spectrophotometrically determined at 540 nm and the results were recorded immediately. The results showed that the survival rate of M. musculus lymphocytes in the positive control group was significantly less than in the blank control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, an exposure- time-effect relationship was observed in the positive control group with CCK-8 and NRU tests. There was no significant difference in survival rate between GM rice Bar68-1group and non-GM rice D68 group (P > 0.05). The GM rice Bar68-1 group also did not show a higher survival rate than non-GM rice D68 group (P > 0.05). These results suggested that the whole protein extract from Bar68-1 and D68 were equivalent in their cytotoxicity, and GM rice Bar68-1 had no acute cytotoxic effect on M. musculus lymphocytes in vitro.

We study the thermal phase transition of the fourfold degenerate phases (the plaquette and single-stripe states) in the two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The critical Ashkin-Teller-like behavior is identified both in the plaquette phase region and the single-stripe phase region. The four-state Potts critical end points differentiating the continuous transitions from the first-order ones are estimated based on finite-size-scaling analyses. Furthermore, a similar behavior of the transition to the fourfold single-stripe phase is also observed in the anisotropic triangular Ising model. Thus, this work clearly demonstrates that the transitions to the fourfold degenerate states of two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets exhibit similar transition behavior.
